Twann sits between vineyards and water on the north shore of Lake Biel, about nine kilometres from town. By regional train, or by boat in summer, GYAN on Zentralstrasse 22 is an easy trip.
Twann: a wine village on Lake Biel's north shore
Twann, Douanne in French, forms the municipality of Twann-Tüscherz together with Tüscherz-Alfermée. The village is squeezed between Lake Biel and the steep vineyards at the foot of the Jura, with an old core and narrow lanes. It's known for the Twannbach gorge, where a trail climbs up to the Plateau de Diesse. Out in the lake opposite lies St. Peter's Island. For work, school and shopping, Biel is the nearest centre, only about nine kilometres up the lake.
Train, boat or lakeside road
The railway between Neuchâtel and Biel runs right along the north shore. Regional trains stop in Twann and get you to Biel station quickly. From there it's a few minutes on foot to Zentralstrasse 22. That's the fastest option without a car, with the vineyards on one side and the lake on the other the whole way.
In summer there's a more scenic alternative: the scheduled boat crosses the lake from Twann to Biel. From the harbour, walk or take a bus to the station. By car, follow the road along the shore via Tüscherz straight into town, allowing about a quarter of an hour. If you enjoy hiking, the vineyard trail through the vines also leads to Biel.
