Beard Care by Lake Biel: Tips for Every Season in Biel

Dry heated air, fog, sun at the lake: how to look after your beard in Biel all year. Routine, oil or balm, and when to see your barber.

If you wear a beard in Biel, you know the drill: in winter the heating dries everything out, in autumn the fog sits over the Seeland for days, and in summer the sun beats down on Lake Biel. Your beard goes through all of it with you. With the right routine, it still stays soft, groomed and in shape. Here are our tips.

Autumn and winter: fog outside, dry air inside

As temperatures drop, your beard keeps switching between damp cold and dry heated air. That pulls moisture out of both skin and hair. The result: itching, flakes and a beard that feels like straw.

  • Wash your beard two to three times a week with a mild beard shampoo instead of daily with regular shower gel.
  • After showering, work a few drops of beard oil into the skin underneath, not just the tips.
  • On especially cold days, use a balm as a protective layer before heading out.

Spring and summer: sun, wind and lake water

As soon as it warms up, half of Biel heads for the lake. Sun, wind and water dry out a beard just as much as heating does, only in a different way. Rinse your beard with fresh water after a swim and give it a little oil in the evening. Lighter oils feel better in summer because they don't weigh the beard down. And since heat makes everything feel like it grows faster, this is a good time for a shorter, cleaner shape.

Your daily routine in five minutes

A well-kept beard does not need an hour in front of the mirror. This routine is enough:

  • Morning: dampen your beard with lukewarm water, pat dry, massage in two to four drops of oil.
  • Comb or brush: use a boar bristle brush or a fine comb in the direction of growth to spread the oil and train the shape.
  • If needed: a balm for extra hold if your beard is longer or sticks out at the sides.
  • Evening: clear out any crumbs and, if your skin feels tight, add a little more oil.

Oil or balm: what do you need? Beard oil mainly cares for the skin beneath your beard and softens the hair. It is the foundation for every beard, short or long. A balm usually contains waxes or butters and adds hold and protection. Rule of thumb: short beard, oil is enough. Medium to long beard or a harsh winter, oil plus balm.

When should you see your barber?

Even the best care cannot replace a clean cut. The lines on your cheeks and neck grow out quickly, and without shape a beard soon looks untidy. For most beards we recommend a professional beard trim every three to four weeks. If you love a perfectly smooth finish, treat yourself to a classic hot towel shave. And if you want hair and beard sorted in one visit, choose haircut and beard. Find out more on our page about beard care in Biel.
